I have decided to reseal and paint my motor and put it back in my car. Looking for any ideas or methods you guys have used to apply a nice smooth finish to your engine blocks. And a paint finish that lasts. This is what I'm starting with.

Hello Chad ! When I was ready to paint my motor , I cleaned it really good with brake cleaner and paint thinner . Then I sprayed it with an autobody spray gun with a DP sealer , then sprayed it with some left over paint that I used on the body , then clear coated it ! All PPG automotive body paints ... Same as you would paint the body ! I did this to a 454 that I had in my Chevelle and ran it hard for 4 years before I took the car apart and sat the engine on a stand for another 2 years . Eventually I sold the 454 to a friend who tore it down and sent the block off to the machine shop to be hot tanked . The guy at the machine shop said he tanked the engine 2 times and still couldnt get the paint off of it ! And it darn near looked just as good as the day I sprayed it , after 6 years and 2 hot tanks ! Its an expensive way to paint an engine , but the results ( to me ) are show quality ! I would add images for you to see , but I cant figure out how to add them to a post ? Joe Heres a few pictures of it in different stages of sealer & paint , then done ........ i189.photobucket.com/albums/z307/bb66chevelle/HPIM0550.jpgi189.photobucket.com/albums/z307/bb66chevelle/HPIM0554-1.jpgi189.photobucket.com/albums/z307/bb66chevelle/HPIM0785.jpg

Hey Chad...I'd strip it to the bare block. I'd take off carb.,distributor, and intake manifold and bolt on an old one so you can steam clean it if you can and make sure you get all the grease off it even in the crevasses. got an old set of Chevy valve covers? Use them to put over heads temporarily while you steam clean and repaint the heads and block. Clean up the brackets and repaint them. Use a good high temp engine paint. Should brighten it up and make it look like a fresh engine.

The engine is not all that dirty. it has some oil on it but little grime. I did a spray can paint job to it about 5000 miles ago. The motor was hot tanked and rebuilt back then.

your going to use an oil pan like that on a street car? I mashed a milodon pan that stuck down below the cross member about an inch. I replaced the milodon with a moroso with kickouts and installed a remote filter mount. very scary when I saw the milodon pan.

The pan is a Moroso 7 QT pan . Its the same exact pan I used on my 454 for four years and I never had any issues with it . But then again , if I put 4000 miles on the engine during that four year period , thats alot . I do plan on driving it much more when its done so I'll be sure to becareful and keep your post in mind ! And as I have in the past , any serious long distance trips or shows , the car will see a trailer anyway . Thanks Joe

WOW...the more i see pix of your car Joe the nicer it looks. That oil pan does scare me too with it hanging below the frame cross member.

The cleaner the block the better! I think thinner works great and it's cheap! I just used an engine paint and gave it about four light coats. cheap but effective. If you wanted to go the extra mile you could grind down the parting lines and bumps on the castings for a custom look, but be very careful to make sure that the grit has no chance of getting inside. a lot of work, but again, cheap.
I guess I'm cheap.

Then one day while pulling out of a gas station I scraped the transition curb, not unusual for my car which sits fairly low, I was being careful and was moving at a snails pace, but the curb managed to rip the drain plug strait out which I didn't realize till my car wouldn't go any more. If you got your goods hangin low you never know when it could bite you. Joe, that is one beautiful car!!! Rob
