Hello guys I read some of you guys go down to OC for a show/meet up. Well looks like some of you guys have built motors and from the video on the front page also drive your Chevelle/El Camino down to the show. I was wondering what tranny you guys run? Well my main question was how do you guys drive if you do not have overdrive. Your cars must scream high RPMS on the highway.
Me I have an 86 with a 402 big block. I have a built th350 and I am scared to drive on the highway because of the RPM. So if you can help me out I like that. Also I do not have the money yet for a 200/700 yet
Thanks for your time and work on the club

Brad, I have a small block with 700r4 trans and 3:73 in my wagon. It does okay on the highway 16mpg. I have the lockup converter hooked up. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it to OC but If i was going to do a lot of highway cruising I'd want a higher gear ratio maybe a 3:55. I went with a 5speed TKO trans 4:10 rear in my 69. But I don't have any real world experience with this yet. So I can't tell you how this will workout for me

Well The only real highway miles I will put on is when I drive from Bucks County to Carlisle pa show and back. The problem I am thinking of is that when I am driving I will be in the 3000RPM range with my 402 big block. I do not want to hurt it since I will be driving so far. So what do you guys think?

3000 rpm is not a problem for the parts. The engine is actually under less load at those rpms. Torque force on the crank is a function of power and rpm. More rpm puts less stress on the crank. I had a 406 small block that was a daily driver with 3.73's and 26" tall tires. Went everywhere at 3000 rpm.

Why are you scared to drive it on a highway? Too many people have the misconception that 3000+ RPM's sustained on the highway is bad for an engine when in reality, it really isn't. You're just used to driving a modern car with OD that runs 2000 RPM's at 75 MPH with quiet exhaust. My 70 has a pretty stout 454 with a TH400 and 3.73 gears out back and has logged a lot of miles up and down I-95 between New Jersey and Maryland, never an issue. I've also driven it from central Massachusetts back home to South Jersey with 4.10 gears in it at the time doing 70-80 MPH the whole way home turning 3600-3800 RPM's. I've logged 21,000 miles on my 70, never an issue.
Same thing with my 69 Charger, has a 727 auto in it and 3.23 gears in it. I've logged over 3300 miles on it with quite a few trips down I-95 and down to OC, MD with it. No big deal. This is what these cars did new, it's what they do now.
